The news site was initiated in the year, 1995, by the present editor-in-Chief Joe Shea. The publication of American Reporter takes place seven days a week as one of the largest daily newspaper that reaches millions electronically.
Though American Reporter, was initially started by the members of the Society of Professional Journalists Internet discussion list, it actually did not get the affiliation with SPJ. American Reporter is also not affiliated to political or corporate areas, and in the beginning was founded to motivate the journalists around the world with the opportunity to own a financial stake in their own individual work. Each of the story that was carried out by the online paper earned equity in profits for the correspondent through the way of subscriptions, advertisements, and the generation of income on their story sale to the other papers. The publication of American Reporter began in the year April 10, 1995 and the news website became one of the first of its kind providing first daily news on Internet with original news and features. After the first publication of the online news site, the chief correspondent of the online paper, former Memphis AP bureau chief Bill Johnson sought to break the news through unique coverage medium. The first major coverage and their work was the news coverage of Albert J. Murrah Federal Building bombing in Oklahoma City. This continued till the death of Timothy McVeigh with the conviction of his confederate. This work of journalism was honored by the ACLU in 2000 with an "Uppie" Award. It was also awarded for the exhilarating First Amendment victory in the Shea v Reno U.S. Supreme Court case, that finally put an end to the power of censorship by the government on Internet.
Some of the other major accomplishments of American Reporter are the worldwide coverage on the ceasefire of Good Friday IRA in Northern Ireland. Los Angeles Press Club award was won by Joe Shea for the contribution of the Best Internet News Story in 2000 for the article that did quite a commendable job of taking 8 people into custody on fraud charges in one of the biggest scam of the time called, "pyramid" scam, involving lot of multi million dollars.
