Fark.com

Fark.com

Made by Drew Curtis, Fark.com is one of the popular community-based news sites. Users can submit their comments and views on various news articles over here. The news scoops may come from other web portals too. The important links are posted by registered Fark members. The links are then screened by website administrators before getting uploaded to Fark.com.

The premium version of Fark.com is known as Totalfark.com. The articles over there are visible to all the subscribed members.

After reading up the articles and analyzing them, members can come up with their own comments. A Totalfark member needs to pay a monthly fee of US $5 to join the community. Fark.com, however, is absolutely free of any registration charges. The registered members of Totalfark can take part in discussions and other community activities. This interactive nature has been cordially welcomed by the members. Some of the links are highlighted with green. This highlighting feature suggests that those links may well be interesting and deserve some user comments.

The “Photoshop contests” segment is one of the interesting features of Fark.com. A graphical editing application or software (such as Adobe Photoshop) is usually incorporated to let the users edit the images. Traditionally the images are posted by the creator of the contest. Normally humorous or witty effects are ascribed to the images.

At the time of inception, the domain of Fark.com had no content but an image of a squirrel with large testicles. Drew Curtis was not happy with such a lay out. He contrived of something new and refreshing that would capture the users' imagination. In 1999, the web portal introduced its current format in which adequate space is provided for the submission of links. There are also discussion forums aplenty. With the inclusion of these tools, popularity and member participation increased steadily over the years. Today it is widely regarded as one of the famous news websites.

The latest upgradation was carried out on April 25, 2007. It saw the removal of the squirrel.

There is an interesting interpretation pertaining to the use of the term 'fark'. Some say that it is actually an euphemism of 'fuck'. Actually, the smaller web portals get 'farked up', so to speak, when they come within the radius of Fark.com traffic. Due to the heavy inflow of traffic over there, the not-so-popular web portals stop responding altogether and hence, the term fark has been used humorously.

There are quite a few sites that are not connected with Fark.com. Geocities.com and Ananova.com come to the top of this list. Home pages of the New York Times and the Washington Post are not connected either because posting links in those sites requires subscription and Fark members dislike such concepts.
